San Marino

On our way between Central and Northern Italy (see upcoming entry) we stumbled across an enclave known by some as the Most Serene Republic of San Marino.

Perched atop Mount Titano and part of the surrounding valley is the world's 5th smallest sovereign state.

We went through our usual microstate routine of trying to work out just how far the country's borders stretched.

While it may rank quite low in population (219th) and football (last), this is of little importance to the Maranese. They have the privilege of living in the world's oldest country.

It was founded in 301 AD by Saint Marinus.

The view from San Marino's highest point, 749m above sea level.

The Guaita fortress, built in the 11th century.

For some reason, there are many shops selling many weapons.

The closest we came to local cuisine was the Piadina, an Italian flatbread sandwich.

P.S. Believe it or not but San Marino's patron saint is actually Saint Agatha!
